RECOMMENDED READING

I started this podcast because over the years, I have read books by women in the industry that have inspired me. Here are some of my favorites

CAN YOU DEAL?

A zine by the band Bleached

In this zine, women in the industry talk about their personal experiences with sexism. Hayley Williams of Paramore, Julien Baker, Tegan and Sara Quinn, Alicia Bognanno of Bully, and many more.

TRANNY

by Laura Jane Grace

Laura Jane Grace of Against Me!'s memoir of her early life and how growing up she always knew she was trans. The book chronicles her life before forming Against Me! all the fall outs and a ton of journal entries that really drive the emotion.

I talk about and read excerpts from the book in episode 4

GIRLS TO THE FRONT

by Sara Marcus

Sara Marcus wrote all about the early riot grrl movement, Bikini Kill, and everything in the 90's that took the world by storm. Everything there is to know about the riot grrl movement, Marcus wrote about in this book. Anyone who is interested in women in music should own or read this.

NEON ANGEL

by Cherie Currie

the memoir by Cherie Currie of The Runaways that inspired the movie of the same name. This book was the first music book I ever purchased and it gives a lot of insight into the early start of The Runaways and how awful they were treated by their manager Kim Fowley who later on was accused of raping Jackie Fox(bassist).

DO WHAT YOU WANT

A zine by  Ruby Tandoh and Leah Prit

"A zine about mental health, put together by author and food writer Ruby Tandoh and her partner Leah Pritchard, with all profits going to charities and not-for-profit organisations.

With nearly 150 pages of interviews, essays and illustration, Do What You Want is a celebration of all aspects of mental wellbeing, from the provision of accessible mental health care to the power of self-belief. With a strong intersectional focus, this is a zine about mental health for all people, in all walks of life. We believe that mental health care and support should be a right for all."

The zine includes an interview with Sara Quinn of Tegan and Sara. I did an episode about it
